Philippe Halsman was a Latvian-American photographer known for his portraits using the technique of suspension photography where subjects appeared to be jumping. He was born in 1906 in Latvia and had to flee Europe during WWII due to being Jewish. In the US, his career took off after meeting Connie Ford. Some of his famous subjects included Salvador Dali, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn. Halsman's photos aimed to capture the true personality of his subjects by having them suspend themselves in mid-air, revealing their inner nature. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern portrait photography.
